No, Aries does not begin on 21 March (and your sign is probably not the one you think)

For years I read the wrong horoscope. And worse: I was convinced it was the right one. I read it religiously. I would buy the magazine, go straight to the back page and run my finger down the column looking for Aquarius.

There was my identity. Or so I believed. Sociable, original, free, visionary. None of it quite fitted, but never mind. The magazine said so, the calendar said so, and everybody said so. You do not argue with printed ink.

Until one day I did. The day an astrologer — who would later become my teacher — showed me my birth chart: that diagram full of symbols that represents the sky at the exact moment we are born.

“When you were born, your Sun was in Capricorn,” she said. I sat there in silence. Capricorn? How could that be?

And then she began to describe me. And all of it was true.

In that moment I understood something that completely changed the way I see astrology: the position of the Sun against the constellations no longer matches the traditional horoscope dates — which means that almost nobody is the sign they think they are.

This is where the mismatch begins

The astrology most people know — the tropical kind — fixes the start of the zodiac on 21 March, at the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. On that day, when day and night last almost the same, Aries is said to begin, and with it the astrological year. It is an orderly, symbolic system, tied to the seasons, but astronomically it is not correct.

There is an important detail: the Earth does not spin perfectly. It wobbles slowly, a little unsteadily, like a spinning top losing its balance. That movement is called the precession of the equinoxes.

It is so slow that it is almost imperceptible, but it is constant. Over the centuries, that small movement has shifted the sky by almost a whole constellation. That is why today, when the calendar says 21 March, the Sun — seen from Earth — is not in Aries but in Pisces. In other words: the astrological calendar no longer matches the real sky.

So why do we still say that Aries begins on that day?

Because tropical astrology does not watch the stars — it watches the seasons. Which means that on that day, every year, whatever is happening in the heavens, spring begins, and with it Aries and the astrological year. And that is how the signs are laid out. It is a symbolic language, not an astronomical one.

There is another way of looking at it. Sidereal astrology does take the real position of the sky into account. It adjusts the zodiac to what is actually going on up there. If the Sun is astronomically in Capricorn, then it is Capricorn. As simple as that. Not by tradition, not by symbolism: by real observation.

Astronomical astrology

I work with that system for one simple reason: if in astrology we believe there is a relationship between the sky and life on Earth, then the sky we look at should be the one we have now, and not the one from three thousand years ago.

It is a personal and a professional choice. I probably owe it to my other trade, journalism. A craft that left me with a healthy habit: go to the source. Verify. Cross-check. And if astronomy studies the real position of the heavenly bodies, and astrology sets out to interpret their influence, then to my mind both should be looking at the same sky.

None of this invalidates tropical astrology, but it does raise an unavoidable question. What if you have been looking at the wrong chart? Because in the end we are talking about two different languages: one symbolic, tied to the seasons, and one stellar, based on where the heavenly bodies actually are.

Perhaps the important thing is not to pick one straight away, but to know that the difference exists. The rest — who you are, what defines you, what fits you and what does not — only starts to take shape when you see your real chart. When you stop assuming… and start looking at the sky.
