Are you sure your zodiac sign is the one you think it is? You may be in for a surprise. You may have believed all your life that you are a Leo or a Sagittarius, but astronomical reality might say otherwise. This is down to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, a gradual tilting movement of the Earth's axis which, over time, has shifted the dates of the zodiac signs as we know them.
What is the precession of the equinoxes?
More than two thousand years ago, when the ancient astrologers designed the zodiac, the constellations and the seasons lined up perfectly. But the Earth's axis of rotation is not static; it wobbles like a spinning top, slowly changing the orientation of our planet. That movement, known as the precession of the equinoxes, has shifted the apparent positions of the constellations over time.
That is why the Sun is no longer in the same constellation as it was on the traditional zodiac dates. If you were born on 9 August, for example, you probably think you are a Leo — but according to where the Sun actually is now, you could be a Cancer.
So what is my real sign?
Here are the updated dates based on sidereal astrology, which takes the real constellations into account:

Is your birthday on the boundary between two signs?
Because the Sun moves from one constellation into the next over the course of a day, I recommend downloading the Stellarium app on your phone and entering your date of birth. There you will be able to find the Sun and see which constellation it was in at your exact time of birth.
Why do many astrologers still use the traditional dates?
This brings us to the difference between tropical and sidereal astrology. Tropical astrology, the one most commonly used in the West, is based on the seasons rather than on the real constellations. It was designed to begin with the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere, tying that moment to the start of Aries. This system ignores the precession of the equinoxes, which means the dates of the signs have stayed “frozen” since they were set thousands of years ago.
Sidereal astrology, by contrast, uses the real positions of the constellations and takes account of the shift caused by precession. So the dates and the signs in this system reflect far more accurately where the Sun actually stands in relation to the stars.
What does this mean for you?
The tropical system remains valid as a symbolic and psychological tool, but sidereal astrology offers a closer connection to astronomical reality.
